Are you a fan of non-toxic makeup for kids? Do you think it is safe enough for your kids to play with it?

A young girl from Illinois got severely burned after she tried on a supposedly non-toxic makeup kit.

After the incident, her mother learned that there were several chemicals in the makeup kit that caused allergic reactions (1).

She started to research non-toxic makeup for kids’, and came across several that claimed to be non-toxic but actually contain harmful chemicals.

Her daughter was allergic to these chemicals. Compared to adults, kids' skin is more vulnerable to the effects of toxic chemicals.

The harmful substances in makeup products can cause reproductive toxicity, cancer, and endocrine disruption, rashes, allergic reactions, etc.

So here are 7 easy-to-remember RED FLAGS to check when buying your makeup:

1. No expiration date

This should be a no-brainer. But did you really check the box for an actual date, or did you assume it must be there, but did not look for yourself?

2. No ingredients list

Another basic, but very important part of every makeup packaging is the ingredients list.

Without it, you risk some nasty stuff:  reproductive toxicity, cancer, rashes, and allergic reactions from many unknown harmful chemicals that could be lurking in your makeup set.

3. Fake information (manufacturer, seller contact)

Every set should have a clear marking of the manufacturer, time, and place where it was produced, plus information on the importer & seller.

Most tainted sets contained false information and no way to trace the origin.

4. No website, no contact, no support

Ask yourself which company does not want a website, a public contact for customers, and offer support – the one that does not care about their customers & doesn’t want YOU contacting them.

5. No safety certificates (CPC), no testing report

When the makeup set was produced or imported, it should come with a CPC certificate with details on the compliances and testing standard that was used to verify safety, together with information about the facility that performed the testing.

6. Blush, eyeshadow and baby powder contains TALC (Asbestos contaminations)

You probably saw headlines connecting  TALC with Asbestos. As talc was widely used in baby powders, blushes, eye shadows, and many others, this is a big problem.

Research shows asbestos is present in talc from trace amounts to 50% or more, as Talc and asbestos naturally form so closely together that mining practices cannot keep them separated.

Asbestos has been proven in being extremely carcinogenic to humans.

7. Contains toxic substances

  • Titanium / Titanium oxide
  • Lead
  • Parabens
  • Fragrance / Perfume
  • Toluene
  • Styrene
  • Mineral Oil

And many more, as this is just a partial list of a total of 20 harmful chemicals that are still found in products selling on the marketplace today.

No big brand is safe - Disney and Johnson&Johnson, are all facing multiple lawsuits.

No retailer is exempt -  asbestos-tainted kids makeup sets were found in Dollar General Dollar stores, Amazon.com, Target,…
